Southern Norway Agder GRIMSTAD

Norway’s national day in Grimstad

Overview

Experience Norway's national day in idyllic Grimstad!

17 May is celebrated in Norway. On this day, the Norwegians commemorate the signing of the constitution in 1814.

After an extensive 17 May breakfast, preferably with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and champagne, it's time to party on the street. There, the children are the main focus. In Grimstad, as everywhere in the country, the children's parade takes place in the morning. Thousands of people are waving flags and shouting "Hurra". Many Norwegians wear their "bunads" to honor this day, traditional Norwegian costumes. There are countless variations of this. Their colors and styles indicate which region you come from.

Nationalist? Maybe. But the non-military and generally cheerful atmosphere as well as the special position of the children at the celebrations ensure that the day becomes a fairly safe affair. The focus is on ice cream, of which as much as possible, hot dogs, speeches and games.

Hipp hipp hurra!
